Overview

The Health Career Program Academy offers an introduction to the many and varied careers in the health field today. Students will explore long and short career options, develop an understanding of the terminology used by medical professionals, develop an understanding of medical environments from clinics to long-term health facilities and actually earn a nursing assistant certificate. When completing the Academy, students will have basic skills to enter the work force or transfer their credits to continue their education at a post-secondary institution.

Post Secondary Programs

Bemidji State University, Northwest Technical College
 Through an articulation agreement with the nursing program at Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College, interested graduates may continue their educational advancement through the Baccalaureate Degree completion program.

Career Options

High School and 2-year college: Certified Nursing Assistant, Health Unit Coordinator, Hospital Registrar, Internist, Medical Equipment Preparer, Nurse Midwife, Home Health Aide, Pharmacy Aide, Medical Secretary.

Four-year college or more: Occupational Health Nurse, Health Care Practitioner, Anesthesiologist, Coroner, Dermatologist, Doctor.

Work Seminar

Work Seminar is an on-campus business course used in conjunction with Internship and Work-Based Learning experiences. Students interested in obtaining high school credit through Interning should register for Work Seminar. This course gives students the opportunity to explore various careers and build essential foundational skills in the areas of problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking. Aptitude and personality analysis are explored along with work safety, resume building, interview preparation, and budgeting. Soft skills taught throughout the course include: responsibility at the workplace, taking initiative, reliability, workplace ethics, and communication skills.

Business and Industry Experience/Partners

 Sanford Health, Choice Therapy, Dermatology Professionals
 Students will explore and research careers with industry speakers, job shadow medical professionals, attend a career fair, and participate in clinical settings to practice skills learned.

Angela Pagnac

Angela Pagnac is a Bemidji HS graduate.  She obtained her LPN at Bemidji Vocational School and her ADN at Brainerd Community College and her Bachelors of Science at Bemidji State University.  Her medical career experiences includes phlebotomy, hospital materials dept, medical records, CNA in long term care, LPN in Ambulatory Care and Acute Care. Her RN experience has been in Orthopedics and Neurology, Emergency Dept and Surgery.  She has been teaching at BHS for 6 years.
